The Bible teaches four principles which are helpful to consider when coming to make a commitment to Christ.
1) God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life
John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
John 10:10: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
2) Man is sinful and separated from God
Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Romans 6:23: "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
3) Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sins
John 14:6: "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me'.”
Romans 5:8: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
4) You must personally receive Christ as Lord and Saviour
John 1:12: "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."
Revelation 3:20: "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me."
The Prayer of Salvation
The following prayer is a great one to pray for anyone who wants to make a commitment of faith in Christ. The Bible says in Romans 10:9, "If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Say it from your heart, but also say it out loud too:
Lord Jesus,
I am sorry for the things I have done wrong in my life.
I ask for your forgiveness.
I believe that you died on the cross and rose again, for me, so that I could be forgiven and set free.
I receive you as my personal Lord and Saviour, and I commit to following you for the rest of my days.
Thank you, Lord Jesus.
Amen.
If you have prayed this prayer sincerely for the first time, CONGRATULATIONS. It is the best decision you could ever make - it has both earthly and eternal consequences.
