Connect Groups
“Disconnected relationships are at the heart of the human problem and expose the deepest need of the human heart. Because of sin, people became disconnected from God and also from each other. But in Christ we can regain our vertical connection with God and also re-connect horizontally with one another. The church is the community of connected relationships, re-connected in Christ, first to God and second to each other - and it is into this fellowship of restored relationships that the lost are also invited to come.” Dominic De Souza, “Why I Need Church”, 2010
LGCC is a small group church, and Connect Groups therefore form the central part of church life. Our desire is that every member of LGCC is an active part of a Connect Group, and that every member aspires to eventually lead one. The new Connect Group & C3 system was birthed by our Senior Minister in 2010 out of a desire to better facilitate the discipleship and upward progression in Christ of our members and attendees and to provide a meaningful and relevant context for people to do life together and be the most effective they can be for God.
Connect Groups exist to:
• to facilitate and fuel the vertical connection (“me & God”)
• to activate the horizontal connection (“me and others”)
• to offer a forum for doing life together
• to develop genuine friendships
• to put into practice the “one another” commands of the New Testament
• to provide basic pastoral care for every church member
• to bring life-application Bible teaching for our day-to-day lives
• to raise and release disciples
• to enable new believers and new attendees to quickly integrate into church life
• to advance members on the journey of discipleship (Highway)
• to release spiritual gifts
• to equip members for being effective in the marketplace
• to create an environment for authentic outreach and mission
• to raise-up and reproduce disciple-makers and leaders
• to link members into the life, heart, vision and direction of the church.
Each Connect Group leader is also a member of a Connect Group. The senior leaders have a Connect Group, and the members of this group each in turn have their own Connect Group with leaders, and so on and so on. This is because every leader is first and foremost a disciple, and we believe that only as we receive can we effectively pass on and disciple others.
What type of Connect Groups are there?
The profile of a Connect Group differs from group to group. We have men’s groups led by men, women’s groups led by women, mixed gender groups, and specialist or interest groups (e.g. singles, youth, mums, etc.). However, we do believe in the principle that men minister best to men, and women minister best to women, youth to youth, etc., and therefore encourage people to consider the advantages of being in either a homogenous group (e.g. single sex group), or alternatively a mixed group which is led by both a man and woman who can also minister specifically and emphatically to their respective genders.
A gathering is officially considered a Connect Group once there are more than 5 members. Connect Groups should consist of no more than 12 people.
