Letchworth is the world's first Garden City, comprising the best of 'town and country' living. It was based on the ideas of Ebenezer Howard, who wanted to bring the country to the town (and take the town into the country), so that the squalor and poverty of urban life in Britain in late 19th Century could be eradicated. This dream was brought into realisation through bricks and mortar, and fields and trees.
Construction began in 1903, and today there are just over 33,000 people living in the town who benefit from the vast array of attractions and facilities available.
Letchworth has 63 acres of unspoilt grass and woodland within Norton Common, an outdoor pool (for those who fancy a splash during those hot summer days), an art deco four-screen cinema, two museums, a newly refurbished town centre – and much more, including LGCC. Because of the town's location (being situated only 35 miles north of London), it is a prime location for commuters and for businesses to become established due to its easy access onto the major road and rail networks that connect it to the rest of the country.
